Revision on The Valley of the Worm

I did an alternate version to the giant maggoty thing from The Valley of the Worm.

I like attributes of both creatures and should probably combine them to make a third. I think I prefer the tentacle mouth of the previous one but the body of the new worm is better developed. I didn't like the arms on the first worm too since I think I jointed them. They are much better as little nubs. I keep meaning to do something in color for the Debacle and I just found some toned paper I picked up last spring. Expect to see some colorfully rendered worm like abominations.

Solomon Kane vs. the wimpy ghost

Here's some Kane vs. ghost action for you. This is after Solomon Kane realizes courage is the weapon to defeat his foe and he takes him on bare handed. I did some other versions of the demon/ghost a few weeks ago that were more ghostish or more beastly, but settled into this as I was putting down their poses. It's a start!

Here's a costume sketch for Pluto from the Rape of Proserpine too,

I was thinking of the Roman armored Dragon warrior guy I did a while back for his costume, gave him a raven feathered cloak and such too. His body is kind of compacted. I'm going to do some more with these stories too, at least some more versions of Pluto. I really want to draw Ceres and Hecate.

Also, I was talking to Tom a bit ago and since everybody is kind of in a busy phase right now I won't offer up a new challenge for a bit. Instead, see if you can develop further on some of the things we've already done or try something new with the readings we have on the table when you're able. Or, just submit what you like from wherever. Thanks!

This week's Debacle: The Orpheus cycle, part 1

It's time to share with you one of my favorite stories from Greek Mythology, and that is the story of Orpheus. The story of Orpheus's life told in myth is sometimes referred to as the Orpheus cycle. It kind of begins before Orpheus comes on to the scene, starting out with Proserpine (or Persephone, depending on your sources). For the sake of fun I'm posting two versions of The Rape of Proserpine this week, one from Ovid's Metamorphoses and the other again from Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales. The poem from Ovid is part of a longer epic narrative, so reading the two may help out some. Also, there's some awesome development between Ceres (Proserpine's mother) and Hecate in the Hawthorne yarn. Check them out and draw!

The Pomegranate Seeds by Nathaniel Hawthorne

As far as the whole Orpheus cycle goes, there are two more parts. We probably won't do them in the next two weeks, but we'll be sure to cover them eventually. If you're interested in finding out more before then just let me know.

Debacle 4 - with a giant maggot

Of the couple of stories I recommended last time I went for The Valley of the Worm. It was a new story to me and I decided to do a few sketches of the evil worm creature from the end of the story. I like spiraling horns!

This is where I ended up after a few versions. I like the composition on the sketch on the right and I'll try to come back sometime soon and do an inked version on larger paper (I was sketching on 8.5 x 11 for these... no scan tiling!).

Here's a sneak preview of a poster I'm working on for the I AM 8-BIT thing I posted a bit ago.

I'm tired and my eyes are gooey, but I think I'm going to start inking it tonight. I'll let you know if I screw it up! There will be a new Debacle posted shortly too, so watch out!
